Pockets Full of Sunshine (PFS) creates a more fulfilling life for adults with disabilities by developing and enhancing inclusive social, vocational and community based opportunities.
Adults with disabilities age out of public school at the age of 21 and as such are suddenly faced with fewer opportunities and engagement. Many families describe this period as “falling off a cliff”, and find themselves searching for ways to fill the lives of their adults with special needs with meaning and purpose. We are forever evolving and committed to building our programming for the adults. We address their unmet needs and desires. PFS does not receive any State or Federal funding which allows us to be more flexible and unique. We are financially supported through donations, grants, fund-raising events, such as our annual Sporting Clay event, and proceeds from our screen printing and crafting activities.
PFS was created with a simple yet powerful mission: to provide inclusive social and vocational opportunities for adults with special needs while building a community where everyone feels seen, valued, and connected. At the heart of it all are the “Rays”—the name lovingly given to the individuals who bring the organization to life each day. As co-founder Carol Bartholomew shares, “We believe that everyone, of any ability, is not only capable but deserves to be an active participant in their community.”

What makes PFS truly special is the joy that fills every corner of the organization. Often described as having a “happy vibe,” it’s a place where kindness, gentleness, and genuine connection are part of the daily experience.
“If you’ve ever known or loved an exceptional individual, then you understand the light they bring,” Carol says. “Their bright demeanor and joyful personalities are truly rays of sunshine to everyone they meet.”
That spirit is woven into everything they do, creating an environment where friendships flourish and a deep sense of belonging takes root.
One of the most meaningful aspects of PFS is witnessing the relationships that form among the Rays, volunteers, and within the broader community. “Seeing the joy of friendships, the pride, and that sense of belonging—that’s what means the most,” Carol shares. “Together, we’ve created a village that truly makes a difference in people’s lives.” It’s a place where individuals are not only supported but celebrated, and where everyday moments become meaningful milestones.
A defining chapter in the organization’s journey came with the opening of the Sunshine House in 2025—a long-held dream that became a vibrant reality. The inspiration behind it began in an unexpected way: small yellow plastic sun shapes that were byproducts from a manufacturing plant. What started as a simple idea grew into a creative and vocational outlet, with the Rays upcycling the “sunshines” into keychains, magnets, gift tags, and more.
Today, the Sunshine House serves as a hub for purpose, productivity, and positivity. It’s a place where the Rays can gather, create, and contribute while building confidence and community. “When you walk through the doors, you feel it immediately,” Carol says. “It’s happiness—and when you leave, your heart is full.”
PFS is deeply rooted in connection, both within its walls and throughout the community. One of its most beloved initiatives is “Fun in the Sun for Everyone,” an annual inclusive beach day that brings together more than 300 participants for a day of shared joy. From surfing and paddleboarding to sandcastles and face painting, the event celebrates the beauty of togetherness. “It’s about the simple pleasure of being together,” Carol explains. “Everyone leaves with sand in their toes and a huge grin on their face.”
The organization has also built meaningful partnerships that extend its impact. Through collaborations like the Serg Group Star Readers Challenge, the Rays have played an active role in giving back—hand-pressing over 1,500 shirts, welcoming students, and celebrating their achievements. These moments create lasting connections and reinforce the belief that everyone has something valuable to contribute.
Like many nonprofits, PFS has faced challenges, particularly in its goal to provide programming at no cost to families. In response, the organization launched a micro-business centered around screen printing and handmade goods, helping support its mission while creating additional opportunities for the Rays. “We’ve learned to be resourceful and stay committed to our purpose,” Karns Hazlett, program director says. “We focus on doing the next right thing and trusting where it leads.” The PFS motto is “How can we make today their best day ever?”
Guided by values like kindness, authenticity, and what Carol describes as “The Golden Rule,” PFS continues to grow with intention. The focus remains on building relationships, embracing all abilities, and creating opportunities for joy and purpose.
Looking ahead, the future is bright. With plans to expand programming, reach more individuals, and continue growing the Sunshine House and its offerings, the organization shows no signs of slowing down. “We truly believe there are no limits to what we can provide,” Carol says.
“As long as we keep showing up with positivity and heart, there will always be more light to share.”
At its core, Pockets Full of Sunshine is more than a nonprofit—it’s a community built on joy, connection, and the belief that everyone deserves a place to belong.
