Meet the Face of Outdoor Living: Bryan Barrs

Designer's Diary

Before Earthworks became a go-to name for turnkey landscaping in the Lowcountry, it began with a boy, a rake, and what he believed were “punishment chores.” Bryan Barrs laughs now at the memory. His father had no idea those Saturday yard assignments were sparking the passion that would eventually lead Bryan to launch his own landscape company.

What hooked him wasn’t just being outdoors—it was the satisfaction of shaping something beautiful with his own hands. “Landscaping is one of the few things in life you can truly control,” he says. “There’s something incredibly meaningful about that.”

That hands-on mindset still drives Earthworks today. The company is known for its turnkey approach—design, construction, installation, and ongoing care—but what Bryan values most is how personal each project becomes. “Homeowners deserve outdoor spaces that feel exciting and true to who they are,” he says. “We focus on creating places where families make memories.”

Some of Bryan’s most memorable work comes from clients who return again and again, elevating and reinventing their outdoor living spaces with bold ideas that challenge the team to think bigger. Those relationships, he says, are what keep the work inspiring.

Community connection is equally important. Earthworks regularly sponsors local events, and Bryan recently partnered with Family Promise of the Lowcountry,  a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting families in crisis. The company also recently completed the landscaping for the new Heartwood Community School and looks forward to continuing work as the campus grows.

Despite a demanding schedule, Bryan always makes room for what fuels him—time with family and friends, travel, days on the water, and adventures with his

dog, Abby.

In the years ahead, he hopes Earthworks becomes not just a leading landscape firm, but a deeply rooted part of the Lowcountry community. Because for Bryan, great landscaping isn’t just about the work—it’s about the people who live in the spaces he helps bring to life.
